Michelle Williams (of Destiny’s Child) opens up about her battle with Depression

Michelle Williams, member of Destiny’s Child, Broadway star and solo artist recently opened up about her lifetime battle with depression. Williams’ shed light on a common cultural expectation within the African American community to exclusively use spirituality as a means of confronting hardship.

“We’re taught, ’Just go to church and pray about it. The Lord is going to heal you.’” Williams said. “Well, in the meantime, I believe God-gifted people, physicians, doctors, therapists- that’s your healing. Take advantage of it…Go see a professional so that you can assess you. It’s OK if you’re going through something. Depression is not OK, but it is OK to go get help.”

Black Girls Smile salutes Michelle Williams and the many strong African American women like her that recognize the importance of being open and honest about mental health, and who encourage other black females to seek help when necessary. As Michelle profoundly states, “you have to choose to be happy.”
